Lot description:

CILICIA. Anemurium. Titus, 79-81. Assarion (Orichalcum, 19 mm, 4.53 g, 1 h). KAICAP TITOC Laureate head of Titus to right. Rev. ANЄMOYPЄΩN Turreted and veiled bust of the city-goddess, looking like Vespasian, to left; behind, a vexillum. RPC II 1703.3 corr. (this coin, but vexillum not noted). SNG Paris 598 (same dies). Very rare, the best of perhaps only three known examples. A sharp and attractive piece. Extremely fine.

From the collection of Dr. P. Vogl, ex Aufhäuser 6, 5 October 1989, 333 (with collector's ticket).

The description in RPC II makes no mention of the vexillum behind the city-goddess as it is lacking on the Levante piece (SNG Levante suppl. 107), illustrated on pl. 77. Perhaps this is a separate variety, or as this cataloguer suspect, the vexillum was removed from the Levante coin by modern smoothing.
